hey ive had this problem for a while, not sure how to fix it tried looking for the file too but no luck.
it seems to coem up whenever i try to install an old peice fo software. i tried installing the old c&c game and this came up when i clciked install on the popup display menu. and also with my scanner, i was going to install my scanner withthe software to use it and for the computer to cnnect to it etc and everything,loads up but when i click install on the software thsi messages apper. i click ignore and nothin wil lhappen click cancel same cancels the process. i clicked ignore left the pc on with nothing running except that and still nout happened. im not sure what is the problem? do u think my memory is low.? only on a 512 ddr ram.
not sure anyone know. ohh i also for the software in the disc i checked the website cannoscan's site for any updated versions and i downloaded tem but still same thign appeared?
wandering must be something?

Kyle has similar problem, are you running win XP, cus if you are, then i think old games wont play, Kyle cant get any of the older tomb raider games to work, or quake 2, he gets same message as you are getting

Dude, I had exactly the same problem!
I found that the file specified C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt had disappeared, so if you look for the file and find it isn't there get hold of a copy and put it back in there, it worked a treat for me!

ok killer
do as sam said this works... cause i sent him that file...
but even better is ....
chuck c&c in the bin snapped... and never play it again pfft
buy a new updated scanner you skin flint.... 
i got my ultra slim scanner/fax/ocx/email for £25 and it roxor..
really good quality.. and picture sizes are huge..
no dont throw c&c in in the bin.. send it me... i play that sometimes..
